The Digital Age Classroom
Introduction
Author : Mrs Lavanya Computer teacher, Master Narotham Reddy IX class Student
A classroom is a room in which teaching or learning activities can take place. Classrooms are found in educational institutions of all kinds, including public and private schools. The classroom attempts to provide a safe space where learning can take place uninterrupted by other distractions. Traditional classrooms are facing several challenges in this digital age. Here the modifications that are to be made to a traditional classroom to fit for this digital age are discussed.
Traditional Classroom
Most traditional classrooms have a large writing surface where the instructor or students can share notes with other members of the class. Traditionally, this was in the form of a blackboard but these are becoming less common in well-equipped schools, and are replaced by flipcharts, whiteboards and interactive whiteboards. Historically, the primary educational technique of traditional education was simple oral recitation. In a typical approach, students sat quietly at their places and listened to one individual after another recited his or her lesson, until each had been called upon. The teacher's primary activity was assigning and listening to these recitations; students studied at home. A test might be given at the end of a unit, and the process, which was called "assignment-study-recitation-test", was repeated. In addition to its overemphasis on verbal answers, reliance on rote memorization (mindless memorization with no effort at understanding the meaning), and disconnected, unrelated assignments, it was also an extremely inefficient use of students' and teachers' time. It also insisted that all students be taught the same materials at the same point; students that did not learn quickly enough failed, rather than being allowed to succeed at their natural speeds. The following images show a traditional classroom.

The Digital Age Classroom
While different people learn in different ways, modern schools still use the basic classroom location to teach their pupils all kinds of subjects. We have come a long way from chalkboards and chalk. Modern technology has presented us with lots of ways that we can make learning more fun and more entertaining. Perhaps most importantly of all, it is also more interactive. While the classroom is clearly the dominant setting for learning, the flexibility of classroom instruction is often called into question. Instead of isolating learners in a classroom, many teachers are experimenting with integrating learning into a student's daily life. New learning technologies and mobile devices make it possible for learning to take place at any time, at any place, and (perhaps most importantly) at any pace that the learner desires. According to the American Society for Training and Development, more than 40% of corporate training now takes place online and not in a classroom. The following images show a digital classroom.

The Digital Age Classroom
Features of the Digital Classroom
The classroom in this digital age should use more and more electronic devices like computers, TV, mobiles etc for daily activities of teachers and students. Every student and every teacher should be given a laptop and all are interconnected in a wireless WAN. Students and teachers should use laptops for their activities and not notebooks. Use of internet should be more than text books. All lesions should be available in video format. Absented students are given these videos. Classroom should be online during severe rain or summer days. Software packages should be used to do following activities.
Attendance
The Digital Classroom system allows the teacher to track student attendance electronically. Each student’s personal contact information can be stored in the program for easy access to contact information in the case of unauthorized absences or unexcused tardiness.
Homework
The Digital Classroom system allows the teacher record assignments digitally. Student contact information can be accessed on a class-wide basis to allow reporting of assignments to students and parents.
Grade book
The Digital Classroom system allows the teacher record student grades in a secure format. Student contact information can be accessed to allow reporting of assignments and grades to students and parents.
Reports
The Digital Classroom system allows the teacher to generate on-the-spot assessments of a student’s progress. This allows for more individualized instruction in areas which a student is experiencing difficulty. The Digital Classroom software also allows class averages to computed, allowing the teacher to evaluate whether the class as a whole has grasped lessons content.
Class Schedule
The Digital Classroom system allows the teacher to schedule class activities, and track their completion. This function also aids in the tracking of equipment usage.
Class Administration
The Digital Classroom system program has the ability to maintain class schedules, add and update class rosters, and customize the each class’s assignments individually.
School TV broadcast station
Students Can Broadcast Their Finish Projects to Cable Community, Classrooms & Streaming Video with School Broadcast Station. It's letting the community know what we are doing. A self-contained PR system, the school TV Broadcast Station has all the equipment, curriculum, template graphics, videos and music CDs. Students need to broadcast news, weather, sports and school events to the community, using text, audio / music, graphics, and video. Teachers, PTA, clubs & other school groups can tell their stories. Students get the feel of an actual TV station with all the functions, responsibilities and excitement of being "live!" or taped.

Conclusion
Finally it can be concluded that the classroom in this digital age should use more electronic devices like computers and more software packages to improve its efficiency in terms of teaching and learning. Learning of technology and usage of technology should go parallel.

Stop Comparing your Child With Others
Comparrison
It is better to stop comparing your child with others and in return focus on the things in which he or she excels. If you don’t support your child with his weakness, he will lose his confidence and resort to attention seeking tactics to please you and others.
You as a parent should not point the flaws by comparing instead should encourage him to work on them. This will not only help him to perform better but will also boost his confidence.
Parents should avoid comparing and should not allow their child’s weakness to be the parameter of judging him.

Performance:
With competition increasing day by day, parent’s expectations from their children are also increasing. Performance pressure is the most common problem which every child faces today. Children are being continuously pressurized to be the best in almost everything today by their parents. All parents wish that their child should perform better than others, but continuously putting undue pressure on your child can suppress his confidence level and will disable him from performing to his potential. Parents should not get angry or taunt children if they score less but motivate them to do better next time. Antics such as taunting, not talking, ignoring etc. for bad scores can have negative effect on their innocent minds.
Many parents also promise rewards for better performance, please avoid this as much as you can. Make them understand the importance of getting good marks and how it will benefit them in the future. Rewards should only be in form of appreciation and motivation
3) Choosing Career

I am going to make my son a doctor; I am going to make my daughter an engineer”, are sentences spouted by many parents now-a-days. Parents often discuss what they want their child to be in their social circles.
Ask your child want he likes and wants to be in life. As a parent it is very important for you to analyze your child’s aptitude and select a profession or career for him in which he shall excel and succeed. Let your child decide his preference regarding his career rather than you enforcing him with your choices. Many children because of their parent’s choice are forced into professions, but fail to succeed because of lack of interest.

Give your child freedom to decide about what he wants to do. This will not only help them to work hard on what they like but will also shine in their career if it is something of their choice. So be supportive to whatever decision your child makes for himself.
4) Punishing

Many parents punish their children for getting poor grades. Parents’ sometime resort to violent form for punishment like beating their children, keeping them home (grounded). This can have a bad impact on the child’s health, as it can make your child develop a fear of failure. They will withdraw themselves from others, their confidence levels will drop and even if the child wants to work hard on his mistakes, he will not be able to do it. Punishing is not the solution to the problem if your child gets poor marks, as a parent it is your responsibility to find out the reasons for his poor performance. Sit with them and find out if they have any difficulty, so that you can solve them as this will surely help them in working hard towards improvisation.
5) Underestimating

If she can come first than why can’t you? ”You must have asked this question to your child an umpteen number of times. But what happens if your child comes second in academics or if he comes first in dance completion or in some sports. All children are different; all of them have their own specialty and interests. If someone likes to be a scientist then others want to be singers like Late Mangeshkar. What is the harm if your child is extraordinary good in singing or playing cricket and average in academics? It is parents who have to find out the hidden talents of their children and support them.
So if you really want your apple to be a shining star, be supportive to him and guide them in a positive way!
The Management of Ananda Jyothi High School would like to follow these from this academic year onwards

1. library books

I issue of library books are very much important in any school. At least weekly once books should be issued to the children apart from providing weekly one library class. Students should be asked the fist about the story they have read from the library book issued by the school authorities. Best story tellers should be a given a prize in each and every class weekly regularly .

2. Craft and Drawing

Craft and drawing is very much important for the students. We can know the inherent talent of the students by giving art and craft work. Students will gain confidence by seeing their art and craft works. It gives some kind of relief from the regular classes and It should be conducted at least weekly once in any school

3. Group Activity

Group Activity should be a regular phenomena in each and every school. The entire class should be divided into four groups and they should given a name to these four groups. These group activities should be organized at least weekly once in that they should give elocution. Essay writing, drawing and story telling competitions and even we can think of more activities base on the resources available to them.

4. Handwriting and Reading habits and paying individual attention

It is very much important in any school that children should write good hand writing. This can be achieved by keeping copy-writing books and training teacher in handwriting improvement classes. It can be achieved in early stages of primary education only ie from pre-primary classes onwards.

5.Dress Code

Dress code is a must apart from the School children and the staff members and watchman and academic supervisors should be given a dress code such that their will a uniformity and it will be dignified also . I wish that any kind of dress code should be implemented in each and every school. I prefer to have aprons instead of saree to the teachers
6. Communication Skills

Communications skills of the students can be improved by organizing the group activity and by giving a topic for each day such that entire school will be covered during the academic year and it will be initially for Higher classes only say 1 to x classes. Communications skills can be improved in three languages by giving regular topics to the students such that teach can correct the mistakes and guide the student in a proper way.

Parents expectation regarding their wards Career create stress
By Sarvesh Nathani , XI , B
Published on 15 th Jan, 2010

Burdening children with high parental expectations put too much pressure on a child of tender age and cause unnecessary stress on tender mind at an early age which has a life long effect in building his character. Such stress destroys their childhood and turns them into adults too early.
It is wrong on the part of the parents to compare wards at such a young age. But how many parents understand the point? In middle and upper-middle class strata of the society, education is thought to play the most important role in shaping the child’s future. Sometimes the pressure of studies becomes intolerable for our children. The pressure of study, expectations of parents, competitions amongst peers very often make the life of children miserable. Horrors of examination and career stresses give the students sleepless nights. The aim of achieving success by any means leads them to use unfair means. Many promising students have been ruined this way. The appalling gap created in social life between the students with high percentage and those with less has a devastating effect on studies and career. On the one hand, parents’ emphasis on studies for high percentages and their expectation for ranking top in each and every field and, on the other, their ward’s efforts for keeping promises has become the major cause for this type of stressful life because the children are repeatedly told that they are no good if they are not academically above the par, if not brilliant. If he or she fails in studies, he or she is treated as an idle.
Parents feel sad when their children fail or go astray and, thus, destroy their future. Parents are defamed when their children do some misdeed and when they do not continue their studies and dropout of school or colleges. It is the parents themselves who are responsible for the children’s disturbed future. It is astonishing that all parents expect their children would be the best in the field they are in. However, sometimes adverse situations may arise and children may even fail to succeed. This is the moment when the parents find the hell broken and their expectations burnt to ashes. Children are also affected by the parents’ situation. As a result they try to hide things from parents, which later on creates complexities. This may even lead them to take some drastic steps.
A little bit of rational understanding from the part of the parents, their love and care and obviously, patience can make their children successful in some field of social life, if not in education.
